Who We Are

Lightbox Analytics was founded in 2012 as a research and consulting firm specializing in advanced quantitative methods for the social sciences. Led by a small group of current and former academics, we strive to apply the most rigorous and innovative techniques available to solving real-world problems.

While our business is new, our principals are experienced researchers with unique backgrounds in quantitative methods and statistical computing:

  • Dr. Peter W. Foley is Lightbox’s Director of Science and Technology and received his PhD in 2013 from the California Institute of Technology, where his research focused on statistical computing, machine learning, and modeling political ideology and behavior. Mr. Foley was previously a Senior Analyst at Strumwasser & Woocher, LLP, and provided data analysis and microtargeting services in the 2012 elections.
  • Dr. R. Michael Alvarez is a Special Advisor to Lightbox Analytics and a Professor of Political Science at the California Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Duke University in 1992, and is an internationally-recognized scholar of political behavior, election technologies and administration, and statistical methodology. Dr. Alvarez is currently editor of Political Analysis, a leading political science research journal specializing in quantitative methodology, and has consulted for Greenberg, Quinlan, and Rosner Research, The Mellman Group, and many others.

Our team also includes Mike Abbott (M.P.M., George Washington), and Julia Walters (B.S., Carleton), as well as affiliated researchers brought in for specific projects. As active members of the research community, we are able to draw upon a network of highly-respected scholars throughout the social sciences. These researchers add their specialized knowledge and skills to our own, and allow us to expertly serve our clients across a broad range of subject areas.
